Flourish & Blotts sells a great variety of magic-related books, including textbooks for Hogwarts courses and other books of general magical interest. In the back there is a corner devoted solely to Divination, which includes a small table stacked with titles like Predicting the Unpredictable: Insulate Yourself against Shocks and Broken Balls: When Fortunes Turn Foul. Another small display contains the book Death Omens: What to Do When You Know the Worst is Coming.

Gilgamesh walks in with his father and sister. As he picks out the school books on his list, his sister eyes a shelf of faery tale books in the at the back of the store. She picks one up and is mesmerized by the picture of a princess waving happily from a wedding scene as her prince smiles broadly at his new bride. As Gilgamesh and his father go to the check out, Phaedra runs up to them.

<Phaedra> Dad, can I get this book?

<Mr. Crandall> Sure, Phaedra, but this is another thing that you must keep secret from your friends.

<Phaedra> No problem! Thanks, Dad!

They finish their purchase and leave.

The shop was crowded with people and Emily and Annie have to push and shove to get to the front. There they found a shop assistant, requested two lots of first year textbooks and began to browse through the other sections of the store. Being girls, the first section in which they looked was the Beauty section. They found books about the current fashions, spells to change hair colour, robe colour, eye colour, spells to grow fingernails, to grow hair longer and to cut hair. But the blurb recommended that these should only be attempted by a qualified witch or wizard.

Emily was interested in the History section and purchased some books on the ancient Greek, Roman and Egyptian wizarding civilisations. She also decided to purchase a copy of Hogarts: A History wanting to know more about the school she would soon be attending. As she was about to leave the section, a few books caught her eye. They were more modern describing the rise and fall of Gellert Grindelwald and Tom Marvolo Riddle. She had to read these. They would obviously include Hermione Granger, Ronald Weasley and Harry Potter, her favourite historical characters.

On her way out she also picked up a volume on jinxes, hexes and curses and a copy of Quidditch through the ages. Annie had decided to only get her school books so they purchased their wares and strode purposefully out of the store.

As soon as Caroline entered the store she grabbed a shopping cauldron and yanked the book list from her mother's hand. She immediately set off to find the books. She knew exactly where they would be. She had seen them line the shelves for years, longing for the day she could own them. Sometimes she would take them down and browse through the pages for hours. But this time she quickly scooped them into the cauldron and rushed triumphantly to the counter.
